Kids and Parents Programs

Second Sunday tours, inaugurated in 2004 (as First Sunday), are organized on a theme in relation to a current exhibition in the Museum. In the same vein, School’s Out! Art’s In!, also begun in 2004, are programs scheduled for days when the public schools are not in session. Kids Series: World of Art weekly programs are offered during the summer months. Programs are designed for children of all ages and target different aspects of the collection. Examples of programs are below:

Second Sunday Event: Here Be Monsters and Magical Creatures
The Museum is full of monsters and fantastic creatures. We will look for these and talk about the imagination and beliefs of the cultures that create them. Create your own mythical creatures by drawing them on a flip book or design your own gargoyle.

School’s Out! Art’s In!: Masks in the Museum
Explore the world of masks in the Museum, from different cultures and times. We will use this as a jumping-off point to learn about the function of masks in general and why people all over the globe use them. Create your own mask: a miniature mask with clay that can be used for decoration or jewelry or a full sized mask to wear or display.

Kids Series: World of Art: Archaeology
Help create the stratified layers in a simulated archaeological excavation. Learn how to search for objects and record stratigraphy. Perhaps you will find a reproduction of an ancient object to keep!

Sample Pre-school Program: Animals in the Museum
Go on a treasure hunt to find animals on different artworks in the Museum’s galleries.
