Second Sunday tours, inaugurated in 2004 (as First Sunday), are organized on a theme in relation to a current exhibition in the Museum. In the same vein, School’s Out! Art’s In!, also begun in 2004, are programs scheduled for days when the public schools are not in session. Kids Series: World of Art weekly programs are offered during the summer months. Programs are designed for children of all ages and target different aspects of the collection.

Sunday Event: Every Picture Tells a Story
Examples of traditional photography and digital photography will be examined by Museum visitors. Is either one "art"? Why or why not? Photographic realism will also be discussed and participants will create a work of photorealism using the grid system or download digital portraits and decorate the photo.

Kids Series - World of Art: Cloth, Feathers and Glyphs
Art can be a vehicle for communication. We will examine the textiles in this exhibition for their beauty and craft, but also for their possible meaning. Participants will create a cloth decorated with feathers and symbols of meaning, such as glyphs, hieroglyphs, and alphabets of other cultures.

Help find different examples of styles and fabrics in costumes depicted in the art of the Museum’s collections. Inspired by those and the textiles in the exhibition, create a weaving with mixed media or a Wodaabe mirror pouch.

Kids Series - World of Art: Paper
Works on paper comprise a large amount of the Museum’s collections. We will examine some of these and compare them to the patterns and designs in the textiles in the special exhibition. Participants will then experiment with making a paper work of art that resembles an ancient one.

Kids Series - World of Art: Mummy is the Word
Visit the Museum’s Egyptian collection and learn about the mummification process and the elaborate procedure to prepare for the afterlife. How does it compare to Pre-Columbian methods of burial? How do different cultures make use of cloth in burial? Design a mummy and decorative shroud.

Kids Series - World of Art: Pottery
Decorations on pottery vessels can often reflect the patterns on wall frescos or textiles. We will examine some of the Pre-Columbian pottery and frescos in the Museum’s collection and compare the textile’s patterns with theirs. Participants will then create a piece of pottery or fresco using clay and paints.

The Museum has a Roman mosaic but also some very small mosaics in the Fine Art of Living exhibition. Find these and hear about the history of mosaics. Make your own mosaic, inspired by these patterns or your own imagination.
