The University of Missouri Seal

The university seal is similar to the Great Seal of Missouri except for the motto and the shield. The Latin phrase sigillum universitatis missourien, or "Seal of the University of Missouri,” appears on the banners and the shield is divided into thee sections. An open book with the university’s motto, salus populi or "The Welfare of the People,” is on top of the Great Seal of Missouri (left) and the U. S. Coat of Arms (right). Dr. John S. Ankeney, an art teacher in the College of Arts and Science, designed the seal, which the university adopted on March 31, 1903.
