Red Cross Relief

The cross on this woman’s hat identifies her as an American Red Cross nurse. In World War I, the American Red Cross provided nurses to aid U.S. army soldiers and navy sailors fighting abroad. The organization experienced phenomenal growth with the outbreak of the war. This figure is especially interesting considering Memorial Union is dedicated to men—it does not honor women who participated in the war front. In mourning, she holds a handkerchief to her face and mourners were common in twentieth-century funerary art.
