Memorial Union Memorial Union: The Transcendent Tower

Signs, Symbols, and Seals: The Sculpture of Memorial Tower

Soldiers and Sailors

Memorial Tower’s four corner piers are decorated with statues of kneeling World War I army soldiers (left) and navy sailors (right). Depicted in service uniforms worn during active duty in battle, the enlisted men face down and hold shields in front of their chest. Their lack of emotion, distinguishing characteristics, and insignia designating rank indicate they are archetypal soldiers representing all the MU men who died in the First World War. Protective figures, the soldiers and sailors continue to fight for liberty and freedom as they guard the university’s campus.
