Memorial Union Memorial Union: The Transcendent Tower

Figured in Stone: The Arcade Sculptures of Memorial Tower

The Voyage

This sculpture depicts two deceased soldiers in dress uniform leaning over the prow of a ship. One soldier holds a shield with the American stars and stripes motif and slings rope over his right arm. The rope alludes to an anchor (not pictured), which is an early Christian symbol of hope. Anchors are also common in Christian funerary art. A vessel of transport, the ship carries the deceased men from their earthly existence to Heaven. This sculptural group also references the Old Testament story of Noah’s ark.
