About Us |
Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Missouri Arts Council, Missouri’s Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program pairs master folk artists with apprentices to pass traditions on to the next generation. Through fieldwork and outreach, staff identifies master artists, urges these artists to locate viable apprentices in their communities, and encourages the team to submit an application to the program. Master/apprentice team meets regularly for lessons over a period of approximately nine months. Staff conducts site visits to document the team on audiotape and with photographs. These materials are archived as part of the program mission to conserve the state’s cultural legacy. Missouri Arts Council’s Folk Arts Project Grants help Missouri-based, tax-exempt, not-for-profit organizations to conserve and showcase the folk arts in local communities. Priority is given to projects that will reach underserved areas and groups, with special attention to living folk arts that are in danger of disappearing. Over the last three years, some very exciting projects have received funding: artist fees for festivals; documentation of a National Heritage Fellow’s repertoire; a showcase of gospel traditions; folk arts-in-education in-service for rural teachers; a symposium and jam session featuring legendary jazz musicians; documentation of rural music traditions; a cowboy poetry festival; and a traditional storytelling series. Some of the cultural groups served by these grants included: Ozark, African-American, African, French, Ozark, German, Native American, Greek, Irish, Israeli, and Hungarian. Community Programs & Technical Assistance: utilizes MFAP’s traditional artist roster as a resource for public performances, residencies, school programs, symposiums, and lecture/demonstrations. MFAP often serves as a liaison between presenters and artists, provides technical assistance and production guidance for presenters, interprets cultural expressions and arts onstage for outsider audiences, develops cultural and biographical information about traditions and artists for publication, and occasionally provides artist fee support. |
