Memorial Union: The Transcendent Tower

"Memorial Tower was made possible through the loyal efforts of countless students and alumni of the University. It stands today symbolic of a noble task yet to be completed." --1929 Memorial Union Building Campaign

As a war memorial and a gathering place, Memorial Student Union embodies many of the memories and experiences associated with the University of Missouri. Almost ninety years ago, the rallying cry for a Memorial Union stemmed from the need to honor war heroes and a desire to create a home for student activities. Today, the Memorial Student Union continues its transformation to meet the needs of an ever changing and diverse campus population.

Recently, the Union added new artwork and archival displays to celebrate the spirit and traditions of the second most photographed Mizzou landmark. The Missouri Student Unions hired Rebecca Dunham, a former research assistant for the Museum of Art and Archeology, to research and assemble displays related to the architectural history of Memorial Tower. Dunham then collaborated with Mike Zweifel, a graphic artist at Mizzou, to create an overall design concept. Installed during the summer of 2008, this permanent exhibit is located on the North side first floor in the Tower Lounge. Tower Lounge offers a comfortable and inviting place for students to relax or study. In addition to the photographic displays of the Tower’s architecture and symbolism, the lounge also features a three panel mural by local artist David Spear.

"The fine spirit of the loyalty that built our beautiful Tower must assert itself again if we are to finish the Memorial Union. Completion of the Memorial Union is a task confronting us right now. But if everyone of us does his share, the ‘task’ will come a pleasure." --1929 Memorial Union Building Campaign
