Surya Surrounded by the Other Eleven Adityas and Flanked by Attendants and Wives, Pala, 900 – 1100 CE, Basalt, 77.288, anonymous gift

More than 1,500 works from India, China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, and Bangladesh that range in date from 1,000 BCE to the present make up the MA&A’s Asian collection. Highlights include a large number of Gandharan sculptures depicting the life of Buddha and a collection of Japanese woodblocks, as well as many woodblock prints, cloisonne and ceramic vessels, and textiles.
