Graduate Research Assistantships

Museum experience can be a crucial component in graduate training and career preparation in many disciplines, particularly in the humanities. As the only AAM-accredited museum in mid-Missouri, and the only accredited museum in the UM System, the Museum of Art and Archaeology offers research assistantships that provide important opportunities for students to gain experience in museum methods, object handling, and primary research in a professional museum setting. Research Assistants work directly with museum curatorial and registration staff, assisting in the cataloguing and documentation of acquisitions, preparing exhibitions and conducting research relating to the Museum’s collections and areas of study.

Because of the close disciplinary and historical associations between the Museum of Art and Archaeology and the MU Department of Art History and Archaeology, the majority of Museum of Art and Archaeology Research Assistantships are usually awarded to students in this area, but graduate students in Anthropology, Classical Studies, Religious Studies, Art or related fields are encouraged to apply.

Selections are normally made by the Director, in consultation with graduate faculty of the applicant’s home department, based on a combination of the Museum’s needs and the talents and background of the applicants.
