This online exhibition explores the concept of decorative lighting from the oil lamps of antiquity up to the advent of electricity. Topics include the iconography of ancient lamps, lamps as symbolic of the divine in religious contexts, and some highly decorative examples from the Gilded Age. Where relevant, we illustrate a few comparisons from elsewhere to expand scope and clarity.
