Mission
The Museum of Art and Archaeology preserves, researches, interprets, and shares art and artifacts with students, scholars, and the broader community to advance collective understanding of and respect for diverse artistic and cultural heritages.
Governance
As a department within the College of Arts & Science, the museum is a part of the University of Missouri and University of Missouri System, the ultimate governing body of which is the System Board of Curators.
Educational Philosophy
As an academic museum that is also accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Museum of Art and Archaeology's exhibitions and educational programs are designed for the benefit of MU students, faculty, and staff, as well as for citizens of all ages in Columbia, central Missouri, and beyond. See Educational and Interpretive Philosophy here.
Fundraising & Advisory Groups
Founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1976, Museum Associates is the friends group that supports the Museum of Art and Archaeology’s exhibitions, acquisitions, and programming, and has been a critical part of the museum’s success over the years. Board members serve as informed and trusted representatives of the museum in the community. Museum Associates also help to manage the Museum Store. Donations to Museum Associates are tax deductible.
The museum’s University and Community Partners Committee draws upon the wisdom, experience, and perspective of selected artistic, scientific, educational, professional, and other community leaders and students with vested interests in the arts, archaeology, and the social well-being of the University and the community. Appointed by the dean of the College of Arts & Science, the committee provides the museum with information, advice, and recommendations regarding key issues affecting the university, community, or other external stakeholders.
