Ancient perfumery dates back 5,000 years and was integral to Graeco-Roman culture, serving several key functions. This online exhibit contextualizes the importance of the ancient perfume business and the ingredients required, in addition to examining the myriad forms of vessels for containing the precious fragrances. Also highlighted are seven perfume vessels from the Museum’s collection, which were analyzed for trace analyses. The interesting, unexpected results from that testing provided new information regarding perfumes for the elite vs. those for the average individual.
