In the years between 1830 and 1848, the period known as the July Monarchy, French art underwent a major transformation from romanticism to realism. This catalogue illuminates the complexity of the time, by providing an in-depth examination of all the trends of the period. Essays by major scholars discuss the historical context and artistic background, history painting and landscape painting, portraiture, caricature, book illustration, and the advent of realism.
