Drapery, defined as artfully folded fabric, is a constant presence in European and American works of art. Though often assigned a decorative role, drapery is a vital element in an artist's visual vocabulary. It can mediate the transition from one space to another, suggest psychological states, or elicit a wide range of symbolic associations. The exhibition Behind the Fold takes a closer look at drapery: where it appears, how it functions, and what it conveys. Drawn from museum's permanent collection of European and American art, this exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, and works on paper dating from the 16th through the 20th centuries.
