In 1961, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation gave fourteen Old Master paintings to the Museum of Art and Archaeology. These form the core of the Museum’s Western art collection. Representing the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the collection demonstrates not only the chronological progression of styles but also the geographic range of Italian art. The paintings include altarpieces, portraits, sacred and mythological images, and genre pieces. The catalog also recognizes the cultural impact and historical significance of one of America’s great collectors.
