July 29 – December 23, 2016

This exhibition challenges the basic definition of a portrait as a likeness, by considering the meaning behind the image—how physical form and individual identity are conveyed in various poses, attitudes, emblems, and artistic styles. Exploring the history of early modern, modern, and contemporary portraiture, DISTINCTION features approximately thirty European and American artworks mainly from the permanent collection, including several recent acquisitions and works that have never been displayed before.
